SAF-Holland introduced the next model in its lightweight SAF CBX AeroBeam series, the CBX23 AeroBeam fixed frame air suspension. The SAF CBX23 AeroBeam fixed frame suspension has a base weight of 465 lbs., 45 lbs. lighter overall than the previous generation CBX23 and 25 lbs. per axle lighter then the nearest competitive fixed frame air suspension, SAF-Holland said. Per Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Phase 2 legislation, the 45-lb. savings will reduce the GHG gas emission by 660 lbs. over 10 years. [Note: Weight includes suspension, 71.5-in. track taper spindle axles with 16.5 x 7.0-in. foundation brakes, and taper weld-on steel frame brackets.]

The CBX23 AeroBeam features include heat-treated cast alloy suspension beams, 80 KSI frame brackets and a 5.75-in. diameter friction-welded axle that is 12% thicker than competitive axles, according to SAF-Holland. The new suspension is also covered by a five-year warranty structural warranty.

Like all SAF suspension systems, the CBX23 AeroBeam is treated with Black Armour, which provides hot dip galvanized level protection without the added weight or cost of HDG. Eco-friendly Black Armour chemically bonds with metal to form a protective layer that is impervious to water and stands up against the harsh anti-icing agents used on roadways, the company explained.

The CBX23 AeroBeam is available with the optional P89 or P89 Plus Air Disc Brake System.

Designed for varying load operations, the SAF Auto-PosiLift automatic axle lift system is available on the CBX23 AeroBeam. The Auto-PosiLift system is programmed to automatically lift the front axle in a trailer tandem a minimum of 4 in. when it senses that only one axle is necessary to carry the load.

According to the latest numbers from ACT Research, preliminary North America Class 8 net orders were 27,700 units, up 600 units from January and 16% from a year ago. With the fourth-largest seasonal factor of the year at 8%, seasonal adjustment reduces February’s Class 8 intake to 25,600 units, up 5% from January.

“Weak freight and carrier profitability fundamentals, and large carriers guiding to lower capex in 2024, would imply pressure in U.S. tractor, the North American Class 8 market’s largest segment,” said Kenny Vieth, ACT’s president and senior analyst. “While we do not yet have the underlying detail for February order volumes, Class 8 demand continuing at high levels again this month suggests that U.S. buyers continue as strong market participants.”
