The Eaton FLEX Reman transmission portfolio with standard or forward shift housings are available for a variety of the most Eaton transmissions including FR 10-speed and RTLO 13- and 18-speed models. Recently added were 12 new part numbers, and the RTO 16908LL 10-speed model, which is popular in a variety of on/off-highway vocational applications. The additional FLEX Reman models were added to expand the availability of the aftermarket transmissions for all makes and models of trucks in North America.

Meritor’s remanufactured carrier program includes most popular Meritor differential carrier assemblies, including carriers for Meritor RT-40-145, RT-44-145, RT-46-160, RT-48-180 and 14X axle models. All Meritor remanufactured carriers are completely torn down; all components considered for reuse are then inspected to assure like-new tolerances. All hardware, seals and bearings are replaced on every unit. A final quality check is performed on a dynamometer to ensure smooth and proper engagement of the gearing and proper operation of the differential carrier.

“There are things to consider when purchasing a remanufactured component,” says Tim Burns, Meritor Aftermarket’s product manager, drivetrain. “The price point you should accept for units remanufactured with genuine parts compared to all makes aftermarket parts can change, depending on the age of the vehicle and its expected remaining service life for second or third owners.”

A deceiving term

Chris Craddock, director of the WheelTime Exchange, says that spec’ing remanufactured components can be complicated, but most critical is the quality of product. “Reman can be a deceiving term when you compare original OEM and OE quality aftermarket parts,” he says. “Match the product with your intended service life, not the low cost alternative, which may not be the lowest cost option in the long run.”

While the benefits of using remanufactured engines, transmissions and axle carriers can be quantified in terms of extended service life and resale value, suppliers also note that remanufacturing is a worthwhile form of recycling. By extending the productive life of a component that might otherwise be scrapped, they say, remanufacturing minimizes the impact on the environment, conserves natural resources by reusing raw materials and reduces the generation of waste by keeping old parts out of landfills.
