Stuart preaches:
Wheels need to be torqued to a minimum of 500 lbs. of torque at each scheduled PM interval to avoid problems with hub assemblies down the road. If the torque is not correct, fleets run the risk of wheel separation. Other factors that might contribute to wheel separation are un-checked corrosion of wheels. Don’t overlook stud, nuts, hub and drum mating and wheel inspections. Improperly torqued wheels will become a safety issue—and—at the very least can lead to an expensive road calls and confrontations with more than your boss. Check with the manufacturer and/or the TMC recommended practice manual for more details.
