FlowBelow unveils new tractor, trailer aerodynamic products

FlowBelow-Tractor-Aerodynamics

FlowBelow Aero Inc., manufacturer of tractor-mounted aerodynamic products, announced two new technologies to complement the company’s current Tractor AeroKit device.

First, the tractor-mounted AeroFender is a patented aerodynamic replacement for standard (non-aerodynamic) quarter fenders. The device is installed in front of the forward-most drive wheels of single-axle and tandem-axle tractors and helps to direct airflow past the tractor drive wheels. The AeroFender may be used by itself, but a higher total fuel savings can be realized when used in combination with wheel covers, center tandem fairings, and rear tandem fairings on the tractor, FlowBelow reported. The intended results for the AeroFender are both safety and efficiency benefits in terms of reduced drag and reduced splash and spray, the company added. The AeroFender is expected to be available for purchase in late 2017.

Second, FlowBelow also debuted its Trailer AeroKit system, which is the first aerodynamic product of its kind that is mounted directly to the trailer suspension. The Trailer AeroKit utilizes wheel covers in combination with patented fairings in front, between, and behind the wheels to address the complex airflow around the trailer wheels and suspension. The system is designed to complement other trailer mounted aerodynamic devices such as trailer skirts and tails and offers additive fuel savings depending on the combination of devices deployed, the company advised. The Trailer AeroKit is expected to be available for purchase in late 2017.

According to the latest numbers from ACT Research, preliminary North America Class 8 net orders were 27,700 units, up 600 units from January and 16% from a year ago. With the fourth-largest seasonal factor of the year at 8%, seasonal adjustment reduces February’s Class 8 intake to 25,600 units, up 5% from January.

“Weak freight and carrier profitability fundamentals, and large carriers guiding to lower capex in 2024, would imply pressure in U.S. tractor, the North American Class 8 market’s largest segment,” said Kenny Vieth, ACT’s president and senior analyst. “While we do not yet have the underlying detail for February order volumes, Class 8 demand continuing at high levels again this month suggests that U.S. buyers continue as strong market participants.”
