Kenworth begins production on 40-in. sleeper for T680 and T880

The new Kenworth 40-in. sleeper for the Kenworth T880 and T680 has entered production. Applications that the 40-in. sleeper is suited for, according to Kenworth, include regional bulk haulers, vocational applications that use straight trucks, and open-deck or flatbed operations where length and weight is a factor.

“The 40-in. sleeper offers drivers organizational features to make the space as efficient as possible for those who occasionally stay overnight,” said Jason Skoog, Kenworth’s assistant general manager for sales and marketing. “The layout provides excellent flexibility and choice in meeting the operational needs of truck fleets and operators. In addition, it’s 260 lbs. lighter than the Kenworth 52-in. regional sleeper offering important weight savings for additional payload.”

The new 40-in. sleeper features a 24-in. wide by 75-in. long liftable bunk that can be tilted up to 90 degrees for easy access to under-bunk storage. It offers a cell phone cubby, hooks specifically designed to hold hard hats as well as coats, and two standard toolbox doors. Fleets and truck operators may specify the Diamond VIT or Vantage interior. It can be ordered now.

According to the latest numbers from ACT Research, preliminary North America Class 8 net orders were 27,700 units, up 600 units from January and 16% from a year ago. With the fourth-largest seasonal factor of the year at 8%, seasonal adjustment reduces February’s Class 8 intake to 25,600 units, up 5% from January.

“Weak freight and carrier profitability fundamentals, and large carriers guiding to lower capex in 2024, would imply pressure in U.S. tractor, the North American Class 8 market’s largest segment,” said Kenny Vieth, ACT’s president and senior analyst. “While we do not yet have the underlying detail for February order volumes, Class 8 demand continuing at high levels again this month suggests that U.S. buyers continue as strong market participants.”
