Where do the latest heavy-duty truck fuel efficiency gains come from?

Every time there’s a new engine launch or truck model update, I always wonder: How much more fuel efficiency can OEMs create? And every time, OEMs continue to produce improvements over their previous “best spec,” which means larger gains compared to trucks that coming off their four- to five-year lifecycle. With that question answered, there’s always another: How do they do it?

Gone are the days of pointing to individual components and applauding their efficiency. Today’s gains are a combination of engine improvements, aerodynamics and advanced intelligent powertrain software. To get a sense for how all of these ingredients come together to cook up delicious equipment operational savings, I connected with Allison Athey, product marketing manager, Volvo Trucks North America, who explains the details and poses a few interesting questions of her own. Watch the video above.
