Magellan, CalAmp launch Android-based mobile data terminal for fleets

Magellan and CalAmp announced the availability of the CalAmp Android-based mobile data terminal (MDT-7) featuring Magellan’s professional-grade fleet navigation software. Designed to increase safety and convenience, the MDT-7 provides fleet operators in the United States and Canada with access to advanced navigation features such as speed limit and speed alert notifications, turn-by-turn directions, trip planning enhancements and a collection of fleet-specific cloud services.

“We are pleased to announce the availability of the new solution giving customers access to industry leading fleet navigation services at a competitive price. Magellan looks forward to working with CalAmp to help customers meet their business goals by continuing to exceed industry standards,” said Stig Pedersen, Magellan associate vice president, product management. “We believe this navigation solution is a great fit within the growing fleet management market.”

The CalAmp MDT-7 is available with one of two Magellan navigation software bundles out of the box. With one package, customers receive the Fleet Consumer Navigation variant for automotive fleet implementations such as taxis and limousines that do not require commercial trucking attributes. With the other package, customers receive the Magellan Fleet Navigation application, which provides a host of trucking and fleet features including customizable truck routes based on vehicle dimensions, junction view to guide drivers to correct lanes for merging and exiting, highway lane assist to safely navigate complex highway interchanges and points of interests such as weigh stations, truck stops and lodging. The Magellan Fleet Navigation application is also fleet protocol-support ready, offering hours-of-service (HOS) and state mileage for international fuel tax agreement (IFTA) fuel logging, automatic on board recording device (AOBRD) capability, estimated time of arrival (ETA) protocols and more.

CalAmp will also be making the Magellan SmartGPS Eco cloud service available on the MDT-7 to provide customers with access to real-time content such as fuel pricing, map updates, weather, traffic reports and alerts. CalAmp and Magellan are working to make the fleet-specific cloud services available to a wider audience through aftermarket channels including the CalAmp Appstore and Magellan’s online portal.
