To get extra life out of overhead doors and ensure safe operation, follow this 13-point inspection checklist, provided by TODCO.
1. Check the door panels for cracks. Replace damaged panels.
2. Check lock alignment. The lock lever arm should close tight against the pin.
3. Tighten or replace all loose fasteners on the pull strap, lift handle, lock and the cable anchor brackets.
4. A safety warning decal should be visible.
5. Examine the cables on both sides of the door. Kinked or frayed cables should be replaced.
6. Check to be sure the top panel of the door is tight against the header. If you see a gap, the top fixtures need adjustment to keep the elements out.
7. Examine the pull strap and replace if worn.
8. Check the bottom, side and head seals and replace them if you find cracks, rips or tears.
9. Door tracks should be properly aligned. The vertical track must be square with the horizontal track or the door will be hard to open.
10. The right and left cable drums should be positioned tightly against the bearing, without gaps. The cable must track properly for easy door opening and closing.
11. For smooth operation, lube liberally in the ball bearings, shaft, outer tires of the rollers, counterbalance spring and the lock. Use only an OEM lubricant specially designed for overhead doors.
12. Check the counterbalance spring. If you find kinks, it must be rewound. If you find rust, lubricate liberally.
13. Be sure the hinges are free of rust and securely fastened.
