Due to the recent flooding in the Midwest, ArvinMeritor’s technical publications department is providing service bulletins to repair commercial vehicle components damaged by flood water. A special webpage, www.arvinmeritor.com/products/truckandtrailer/submerged_systems.asp, links visitors to two related bulletins, some key points of which are shown here (see website for details):
Axles: Rear Drive/Front Drive Steer
1. Remove and completely disassemble the carrier assembly.
Inspect all components for water and contaminant damage that includes, but is not limited to, rust and corrosion. Replace all damaged components.
2. Clean housings to ensure that all water and contaminants are removed.
3. Replace all seals. Do not reuse seals.
4. Replace the breather assembly.
Front Non-Drive Steer
1. Remove and completely disassemble wheel end and steering knuckle assembly.
2. Inspect all components for water and contaminant damage, including, but not limited to, rust and corrosion. Replace all damaged components.
3. Replace all seals.
Tie Rods
Remove and replace the tie rod ends. Inspection is not possible.
Trailer Axles
1. Inspect all components for water and contaminant damage that includes, but is not limited to, rust and corrosion. Replace all damaged components.
2. Remove the spindle end plugs. Drain any water that may have entered the axle tube cavity.
3. Blow air through the inside of the tube to clean and dry the tube cavity.
4. Replace the spindle end plugs.
Transmissions: Meritor 9-, 10- and 13-Speed Manual Transmissions
1. Remove and completely disassemble the transmission assembly.
2. Clean the housing to ensure that you have removed all water and contaminants.
3. Inspect all components for water and contaminant damage that includes, but is not limited to, rust and corrosion. Replace all damaged components.
4. Replace all seals. Don’t reuse seals.
5. Replace the breather assembly.
ZF-FreedomLine Automated Transmission
1. Remove and replace the transmission electronic controller (ZMTEC) and the voltage doubler.
2. Inspect the wiring harness for water and contaminant damage that includes, but is not limited to, rust and corrosion. Replace the wiring harness if you find corrosion.
Mechanical Systems
Remove the transmission and return it to an authorized ZF service center for disassembly and inspection. Call ArvinMeritor’s OnTrac warranty team (866-668-7221) for information.
Transfer Cases
1. Remove and completely disassemble the transfer case assembly.
2. Clean the housing to ensure that you have removed all water and contaminants.
3. Inspect all components for water and contaminant damage that includes, but is not limited to, rust and corrosion. Replace all damaged components.
4. Replace the breather assembly.
5. Replace all seals. Do not reuse seals.
