Wheel-Checks for simple visual inspections

These loose wheel nut indicators allow a loose wheel not to be seen in a simple visual inspection. If a wheel nut has loosened, the Wheel-Checks will become out of sequence. The units are also heat sensitive; if the temperature exceeds 248 degrees F, Wheel-Checks will start to blister around the circumference and eventually distort.

EPA SmartWay verifies Continental’s super single

Continental Tire North America Inc. announced that its fourth commercial truck tire–the Heavy Trailer Long-Haul (HTL1) super single trailer tire–has been added to the U.S. EPA SmartWay Transport Partnership list of verified technologies for tires.

This super single tire replaces duals on highway or regional trailer axle fitments. It features 13/32-in. tread depth, which the company said minimizes irregular wear and maximizes fuel efficiency, and an advanced fuel-efficient compound. A unique feature of the tire is its pyramid stone bumper/ejection system that reduces stone retention and casing penetrations, according to Continental.

Continental adds ultra low profile truck tires

Continental Tire North America Inc. announced it has added new drive and steer tires in ultra low profile sizes to its lineup.

Continental said it would begin sales of its new HSL2 Eco Plus (Heavy Steer Long-Haul) and HDL2 Eco Plus (Heavy Drive Long-Haul) truck tire sizes in the 295/60R22.5 size this month. These truck tires are a full three inches shorter than the 275/80R22.5 sizes, but each has 1,215 more lbs. of additional carrying capacity in a single fitment for load range G, the company said.

Michelin offers X One retread for refuse, urban applications

Michelin Retread Technologies has expanded its retread offering for its X One wide single truck tires by introducing the Michelin X One XZU S pre-mold retread. The new retread will enable refuse fleets and other urban, high-scrub or regional application vehicles to realize the benefits of both a retread and a wide single tire, according to the tire maker.

The new pre-mold retread is now available in a 390/430 tread size (tread widths with two measurements have wings–the first number is the tread base width in mm; the second number is the overall width, wing tip-to-tip).

Michelin said the retread is designed for long tread life and outstanding scrub resistance with 23/32 in original tread depth of an application-specific compound.

Continental enhances regional tire for pick-up, delivery

Continental Tire North America Inc. announced it has enhanced its HSR1 (Heavy Steer Regional) tire’s performance capabilities for medium-duty vehicles used in pickup and delivery applications.

The new tire will now feature a curb/scuff rib feature in the 245/70R19.5 size. This new feature helps prevent damage conditions caused from curbing, cuts and abrasions and protects the casing for greater retreadability, Continental said.

SKF monitor detects early damage to wheel bearings

SKF Automotive Division has introduced the SKF Wheel End Monitor, which the company said is designed to detect early stage wheel bearing damage in heavy-duty trucks, trailers, buses and other commercial vehicles.

The new device, which is mounted on the outboard side of a commercial vehicle’s wheel, monitors vibration changes and alerts the driver through a flashing red warning signal of an impending bearing failure. When the system detects a defect, the vehicle is then brought in for immediate inspection and repair. This advanced detection increases safety by avoiding collateral damage to adjacent wheel end components, SKF said.

Tire-Track has new permanent tire bar code

Tire-Track LLC has released the CVL-2 all rubber, permanent serialized bar code label for tires. The technology allows the user to track virtually every aspect of tire management, to further act as a theft deterrent and to minimize substitution, the company said. The label produces more than 25 lbs. of adhesion on the sidewall of
