Making informed truck management decisions during the microchip shortage

The trucking industry could be headed toward the perfect storm of equipment shortages. We’ve already heard how the microchip shortage is impacting OEM truck production, and those supply challenges are being felt by suppliers and service providers. ACT Research noted that Class 8 truck orders are nearing their “best ever,” and vocational markets are expected to pick up in the back half of 2021. That’s a lot of demand for trucks with a tight supply chain.

It’s time to start thinking about what happens when you need to stretch your equipment to make business ends meet.

Do you lean on leasing? Move trucks into new applications? Beef up preventative maintenance practices? The answer most likely is a mix of all of that. To get an idea of how fleets can start capturing the right data in order to make informed equipment management and maintenance decisions, I connected with Matt Copot, vice president of maintenance, and Gino Fontana, CTP, vice president of operations, Berkeley Division and Puerto Rico, both with Transervice. Watch the video above for all of their equipment management insight.

Let's cut to the EV chase, here's how battery electric truck adoption is shaking out from the view of Rakesh Aneja, head of eMobility, Daimler Truck North America:

"At Daimler Truck, we've been working on zero emission transformation for the last several years, and we are at the point where we have several battery electric vehicle models that are in series production today. We have 10 [electric truck] models in production globally and four in production in the United States. Having said that, at least from our perspective, the transformation is slower than what we would expect and what we would hope."

Sheer data is no good to you on its own. You need to understand what you can do with it, and the ways in which it can help your fleet.
