Used Class 8 volumes (same dealer sales) reversed course again in November, falling month-over-month and more than offsetting October’s gain, according to the latest preliminary numbers from ACT Research. The report also indicated that used Class 8 same dealer sales volumes have dropped year-over-year, but remained stronger year-to-date. Average age was virtually unchanged, down just 1% y/y, while average miles rose 2% compared to November 2017. Pricing remained strong, up 12% year-to-date.
“Those who have been associated with the used truck market for more than a few years know that it is a cyclical market,” said Steve Tam, vice president at ACT Research. “This cycle, robust demand for new equipment has added a kicker to the used truck cycle, with some buyers opting for used trucks as a substitute to the new units that have, at times, been difficult to secure.”
