Volvo Trucks partners with Fontaine Modification on reduced-height VAH 300 day cab

The Volvo Auto Hauler (VAH) 300, Volvo Trucks’ North American day cab, is now available for order at an unladen 94.5-inch height.

The lower overall height of the VAH 300 offers the flexibility to position a larger vehicle over the truck’s cab to maximize payload, Volvo says. A clean top-of-frame behind the cab also allows for easier body mounting and trailer hookup, the company adds.

In addition to this new model, Fontaine also modifies a full range of Volvo Trucks models for any auto hauling application or load size, including:

  • VAH 300 (available as Fontaine model 94 or 97)
  • VAH 400 (available as Fontaine model 97 or 102)
  • VAH 600 (available as Fontaine model 97 or 102)

Consistent with the rest of the VAH family, the new, reduced-height VAH 300 model features deep-drop front axles and low-height Volvo Air Ride rear suspensions, the company says. The model is available with Volvo’s D11 and D13 engines. The D11 features 325 to 425 HP and 1250 to 1550 lb./ft. of torque, while the D13 features 405 to 500 HP and 1450 to 1850 lb./ft. of torque. The Volvo VAH 300 is also available with the Volvo I-Shift automated manual transmission.

ACT Research trailer report finds carriers with ‘reduced willingness to invest in equipment’

ACT Research says limited capex and companies saving money to meet EPA regulations are currently weighing on trailer demand.

ACT-Feb-24-Trailer-Net-Orders-Cancellations

According to ACT Research, February net trailer orders, at 20,500 units were nearly 21% lower year-over-year, but 6,600 units above January’s intake. Weak freight rates continue to reduce carriers’ willingness to invest in equipment, ACT said.

“Seasonally adjusted, February’s orders fell to 20,100 units compared to a 12,600 seasonally adjusted rate in January,” said Jennifer McNealy, director of commercial vehicle market research and publications at ACT Research. “On that basis, orders increased 59% month-over-month. Dry van orders contracted 18% y/y, with reefers and flats both down 31% compared to February 2023.”
