Webb Wheel‘s OEM business unit published its Q2 newsletter containing information about the proper wheel end installation procedures for mounting outboard brake drums onto piloted hubs. According to Webb, correct installation procedures need to be followed to avoid damage to both the drum and hub.
To prevent damage to both the drum and the hub, Webb Wheel instructs users to rotate the hub so that one of the brake drum pilot pads is in the 12 o’clock position with a proper tightening sequence also beginning with the stud nearest the 12 o’clock position. Webb Wheel OEM warns that pilot configurations (number and spacing) vary greatly from hub to hub.
Webb Wheel goes on to say that the total indicated run out (TIR) of the drum braking surface to the axle center line should be less than .020-in. in a proper installation. A drum mounted non-concentrically can overheat one section/portion of the drum and cause premature failure.
