Webb Wheel offers braking solutions

The new Vortex drum by Webb Wheel Products is said to be a cost-efficient solution for fleets looking for alternatives to meet proposed new stopping distance regulations. The Vortex drum runs cooler and is durable yet lighter than standard drums, according to the company. The superior heat dissipation characteristics of the Vortex drums can maximize lining life and reduce life cycle costs, Webb said.

Webb Wheel Products says its Vortex drum is a high performance, cost-efficient solution for fleets looking for the best alternative to meet the proposed new stopping distance regulations. Over the next year, Webb said it will expand the number of vehicle applications for the Vortex drum to include drums for larger and/or wider S-cam drum brakes, which many fleets will choose as their option, according to the company.

Drum brakes will be the best solution for many fleets because:

• Weight considerations: Since fleets have already incurred additional weight associated with diesel emission regulations, weight will continue to be a key consideration in new vehicle specification
• Cost: Overall lifecycle cost control
• Serviceability of braking system: Fleets will be interested in technology that utilizes existing maintenance procedures and technician knowledge
• Parts availability: Nationwide availability of parts to minimize downtime during routine maintenance intervals or emergency unit down time situations

Ken Kelley, vice president of OES business unit for Webb Wheel Products, said the product addresses some of the concerns of vehicle operators, especially with shorter stopping distances required:

• The Vortex drum is lighter than standard drums but is manufactured from the same, reliable grey iron material.
• The Vortex drum runs cooler because of its unique patented design with reduced wall thickness, a centerline squealer band and external ribs.
• The superior heat dissipation characteristics of the Vortex drums can maximize lining life and reduce life cycle costs.

In addition to the Vortex drum, Webb also offers standard and heavy-duty brake drums to fit all S-cam brake applications.
