Correcting truck spec’ing assumptions, the impact on fuel efficiency

Last time I talked with Allison Athey, product marketing manager at Volvo Trucks North America, she turned the tables and sprung a question on me in true Unscripted fashion. When we were done recording, I joked that she should guest host next time and ask me the questions. She said she was game and the gauntlet was thrown down.

So here we are: Athey puts truck spec’ing questions to me and challenges my equipment assumptions. I get a couple of answers right, but I also get a couple wrong, especially when it comes to truck aerodynamic features and how much fleet manager spec’ing aerodynamic decisions can impact fuel efficiency. Do you know how much control you have over fuel efficiency when spec’ing aero features? What’s more aerodynamic, a sleeper or a day cab?

Watch the video above and you might be as surprised as I was by the answers to those questions and many more.

You don’t just spec a truck for sustainability in the same way that you don’t spec a truck only for fuel efficiency. Those are important spec’ing considerations to be sure, but safety is equally important, and then there’s connectivity that allows you to better manage your asset. Today’s heavy-duty trucks package all of the important considerations together to deliver on fleet expectations.
