Save the fleeting darkness for Halloween with proper truck lighting

When it comes to keeping your trucks on a roll, lighting isn’t typically the first thing you might think of, but don’t be mistaken. If you want to maximize safety and profitability and minimize downtime in your fleet, it takes a lot more than just changing a burnt out bulb when you notice it.

It’s time to consider all the relevant concerns of your fleet’s lighting.

If you want to enhance productivity, safety and reliability, you need to think about your truck’s lighting from your headlamps to your tail lights. This would include stop/turn lights, rear turn signal lamps, and stop lamps as well.

There is no one-size-fits-all solution to your fleet’s lighting. Just like every other component in the industry, there is a lot to take into consideration before determining which fit is the right one for your fleet’s specs. Considering features such as bulb style, beam patterns, color temperature, regulations and warranties can help you to decide on which one fits best.

The intricacies and details can feel like a strenuous task, however, spec’ing the wrong lighting can draw more power than necessary, a result that could prove dire in the winter months especially.

The utilization of quality LED lamps has additionally seen wide-spread adoption through fleets looking to maximize the value of their dollar. With an expected 15-year lifespan and lower amp draw compared to incandescent bulbs, LED lighting could bring your fleet savings that could amount to millions of dollars when considering the cost of repairs, replacement and downtime.

Significant savings can be obtained from proper lighting maintenance as a result of minimal downtime, labor costs, replacements and not to mention the CSA fines you’d be dodging too.

The results of poor lighting are scary to say the least but the proper lighting specs and maintenance of your fleet’s lamps and bulbs will protect your trucks from the negative consequences that lurk in the darkness.

The headline is a question that's on a TMC taskforce docket, and one that Al Anderson, vice president of sales and marketing at Peterson Mfg. Co., has a keen interest in.

"We haven't finished the recommended practice yet, but we're trending towards some percentage of LEDs being out before it's not legal anymore, which therefore [means] it's not safe anymore," he said, standing inside the Peterson Mfg. Co. show trailer at this year's TMC show held in New Orleans. "Keeping trailer lights lit is vital to uptime because you're not going to get a violation, you're not going to get an infraction, you're not going to be put out of service by CVSA. It is just very critical to keep everything illuminated like it should."
