“Sustainability.” “ESG.” “Electrification.” You can’t have a conversation in today’s fleet world without those three topics coming up. Headlines from huge transportation operations tout their early adopter equipment investments and first steps toward a zero emissions reality. For the rest of the industry, decarbonization can feel like a huge hurdle to jump over only to have another, even larger hurdle to clear just after the first. Instead of looking at the finish line, let’s focus on what needs to be done to move forward today.
The good news is, you’re probably already doing it. Focusing on increasing fuel efficiency is a key component to decarbonizing–less fuel burned means fewer emissions. That’s been a fleet’s equipment strategy bread and butter for decades now. From there, you can expand your sustainability horizons to long-term plans for electrification or start talking about other alternative fuel opportunities.
Instead of just waxing on about vague sustainability generalities, I connected with Merchants Fleet’s Hari Nayar, vice president, fleet electrification and sustainability, and Richard Hapach, director, medium- and heavy-duty trucks. They talk through top sustainability strategies they’re working through, and how to leverage data to make sure that the fleet hits their mark. Watch the video above for all of their insight.
