Fontaine Fifth Wheel said it has taken the best features of its two heavy-duty fifth wheels, the No-Slack H5092 and X5092, and combined them into a single new heavy-duty fifth wheel, the Fontaine Ultra HD. The Fontaine Ultra HD is part of the company’s new Ultra family of fifth wheels.
The new Ultra HD fifth wheel weighs less than the Fontaine X5092 and retains the special steel reinforcement offered by the H5092 for added strength and durability. It is rated for severe duty applications such as oil fields, logging, chip hauling and end dump trailers. It is also expected to be a popular model for export to regions with limited road infrastructure, the company said.
The Ultra HD fifth wheel fits Fontaine’s existing mounts, including two sliders and a number of stationary mounts. It is also available as a blocked model for frameless dump applications. It offers a 70,000-lb. vertical load and 200,000-lb. drawbar pull.
“Through our continuous improvement efforts, we realized that the minor differentiation that existed between our two heavy-duty products was not offering significant benefit to our customers,” said Terry Mennen, vice president of sales and marketing for Fontaine. “By rationalizing the two products into one, we reduce part numbers for our OEM customers while continuing to offer a heavy-duty fifth wheel that meets the severe service needs of our end-user customers in the field.”
Like all Fontaine fifth wheels, the Ultra HD features a patented lock design that eliminates the possibility of false trailer couplings to prevent dangerous high-hitching, the company said. The Ultra HD is a cast steel top plate.
