It has been nine years since the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) launched the SmartWay program aimed at reducing transportation emissions by creating incentives to improve supply chain fuel efficiency. To give you some perspective, in 2004, George W. Bush defeated John Kerry in the presidential election and Fleet Equipment’s then-editor Tom Gelinas urged fleet managers to invest in technology such as rear obstacle sensing systems and auxiliary heating and cooling technology designed to eliminate the need for idling for interior climate control. So how far has the heavy-duty truck industry come?

The Double Coin RR680 tire has met the requirements of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) SmartWay program.
Volvo adds air disc brakes, SmartWay chassis fairings
New air disc brakes and SmartWay-compliant aerodynamic chassis fairings have been added by Volvo Trucks for VN models in North America. Volvo air disc brakes will initially be available on all VN model front axles in August 2013, expanding to include all axles in 2014.

Bridgestone to offer SmartWay verified retreads
Bridgestone Commercial Solutions recently submitted four Bandag retread products to the Environmental Protection Agency for SmartWay verification. Upon approval, Bridgestone will offer a total of seven SmartWay verified retreads.
SmartWay spec’ing for tires and trailers
The U.S. EPA has evaluated fuel saving benefits of various vehicles, systems and components. The result is a continually updated list of SmartWay Verified Technologies, including tires and aerodynamic devices.
Yokohama TY517 added to SmartWay list
The new Yokohama TY517 ultra wide base drive tire has joined the list of nine products from the tire maker now recognized as SmartWay verified technologies by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
Michelin offers SmartWay-verified retreads
Three Michelin North America retreads have been added to the EPA SmartWay verified technologies list, while four others are being evaluated by the program. Added were: XT-1 AT Pre-Mold for trailer applications and XDA2 19 AT Pre-Mold and XDA2 23 AT Pre-Mold for drive axle applications.
