The Macungie Cab and Vehicle Assembly operation of Mack Trucks in Macungie, Penn., has become the first U.S. manufacturing facility to receive platinum-level certification in the American National Standards Institute (ANSI)/ MSE 50021:2012 Superior Energy Performance (SEP) in Mature Energy Pathway category.
The certification means that the Mack plant demonstrated an energy performance improvement of 41.94% between 2002 and 2012, exceeding the 15% required for certification. The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) developed the SEP protocol in partnership with the U.S. Council for Energy-Efficient Manufacturing.
As part of the certification, Macungie Cab and Vehicle Assembly employees received training in Energy Management Standards to better understand how to improve energy performance. In parallel with ongoing energy improvement initiatives, employees were encouraged to form teams and submit energy savings ideas. Recognition was given for the best and most achievable ideas.
Plant investments resulting in improved energy performance included lighting upgrades and controls, a building automation system, air compressor management, changes in heat recovery during the manufacturing process and HVAC system efficiency upgrades.
