XTRA Lease adding 9,000 new trailers this year

XTRA Lease ordered approximately 9,000 new trailers for 2015. The company is adding a mix of dry vans, liftgated vans, reefers, flatbeds and chassis, according to its announcement. New trailers will arrive at each of the company’s 53 rental locations throughout the year. As with recent XTRA Lease purchases, all 53-ft. vans and reefers will receive fuel-saving aerodynamic side skirts, low-rolling resistance tires and trailer tracking units to help fleets attack utilization and costs, the company said.

“While capacity remains tight, driven largely by today’s driver shortage, we’re continuing to invest in new trailers to provide fleets options for acquiring equipment,” said Bill Franz, XTRA Lease president and chief executive officer. “New equipment offers many advantages. Our specs include the latest technology to help save fuel, provide protection against costly damages and prevent maintenance downtime.”

New dry vans will include galvanized rear door frames, rear bumpers and landing gear bracing and wing plates. Some units also will receive galvanized landing gear legs, the company said.

XTRA Lease’s 2015 purchase includes a mix of the following:

  • 53-, 48- and 57-ft. dry vans;
  • 53-ft. reefers;
  • 53-, 48- and 28-ft. liftgated vans;
  • 53-ft. straight frame and single-drop flatbeds;
  • 48-ft. tandem slider, spread-axle, expandable and double-drop flatbeds; and
  • 20/40-ft. tridem chassis.

According to XTRA Lease, nearly half of its fleet is no more than 5 years old. The company noted that it has added more than 35,000 trailers equipped with aerodynamic side skirts and low rolling resistance tires since 2010.

Black curtains surround the room that's segmented by rolling privacy screens, blocking off the business end of a European Volvo truck (is it an FH? An electric? It's hard to tell.) This is the only area trucking journalists from North America are allowed in. The rest of the building, named Lundby, high-tech center for research and development at Volvo Trucks headquarters in Gothenburg, Sweden, is off-limits. Even several of the Gothenburg-based Volvo Trucks employees that are presenting haven't been allowed in this building before. But what we're here to talk about is anything but a secret.
