Mack Trucks introduces Anthem on-highway truck

Mack Trucks has announced the launch of the Mack Anthem, a fully new on-highway truck.

“As one of the most significant new trucks in Mack’s 117-year history, the Anthem combines our latest innovations with more than a century of truck-building know-how,” said Dennis Slagle, president of Mack Trucks. “The incredible result is a truck that’s been built for our customers’ business and designed for drivers, all while delivering the power and presence that only a Mack truck can deliver.”

The Anthem is available in multiple configurations including a Day Cab, a 48-in. Flat Top Sleeper, and a 70-in. Stand-Up Sleeper.

The Anthem’s standard engine is the 13-liter Mack MP8 engine, which produces up to 505 HP and 1,860 lb.-ft. of torque depending on spec. Several enhancements to improve efficiency and productivity are included, such as a patented wave piston design that enables more complete fuel combustion and a common-rail fuel system to more accurately control fuel injection.

The 11-liter Mack MP7, with up to 425 HP and 1,560 lb.-ft. of torque, is also available as an option on the Anthem.

Mack’s 12-speed mDrive AMT is standard on all Anthem models. Additionally, mDrive HD 13- and 14-speed variants are available.

Also available on mDrive-equipped models is Mack Predictive Cruise, an intelligent system that memorizes the topography of the truck’s routes to help improve fuel efficiency by up to 1%.

Bendix Wingman Fusion, a camera- and radar-based driver assistance solution, also comes standard on all Anthem models.

Mack Anthem’s new aerodynamic enhancements improve fuel efficiency by up to 3%. In addition to a new hood and grille, Mack engineers redesigned the roof and chassis fairings, mirror covers, and front bumper and air dam to more easily cut through the wind.

All exterior lighting on the Anthem is now exclusively LED, including headlights that are 66% brighter than those of its predecessor.

The Anthem also features a redesigned interior, which is also now standard on the company’s Pinnacle and Granite trucks. Interior features include:

  • A new gauge cluster and dash layout that makes frequently used controls easier to reach, and has room for 18 switches;
  • Automatic Temperature Control that maintains the temperature set by the driver;
  • A new lower center console that includes cup holders and storage bins;
  • Multiple 12-volt and USB charging ports available throughout the dash;
  • A new non-slip pad on top of the dash that features two USB charging ports; and
  • A race car-inspired flat-bottom steering wheel.

Updates to the Mack’s Co-Pilot display, located behind the steering wheel, include a new 5-in., full-color screen for better visibility and more intuitive navigation through its many functions. Co-Pilot provides drivers a convenient way to monitor vehicle information, including engine and oil temperatures, trip odometers, aftertreatment status, tire pressures and more. A Pre-Trip Assistant guides drivers through inspection points and includes a single-person exterior light inspection mode. Controls for the Co-Pilot functions are located on the updated right-hand steering column stalk.

Mack also introduced Mack Connect, which the company says will serve as the reference for Mack’s connectivity and uptime service offers. With Mack Connect, current and future services will be structured under connected support, connected business and connected driving. Using predictive analytics and connective technologies, Mack Connect turns data produced by the truck, the driver and the service process into insights and actions. The Mack Anthem will also have access to the various Mack uptime solutions, including the GuardDog Connect telematics service and Mack Over The Air.

The Mack Anthem is available for order now, with full production beginning in Q1 of 2018.
