Ford introduces new diesel engine for F-150

Ford has announced that it will begin offering a diesel engine for the Ford F-150 for the first time. The 3.0-liter Power Stroke V6 diesel engine specs include a targeted EPA-estimated 30 MPG highway rating, a best-in-class 11,400 lbs. of towing capacity and 2,020 lbs. of payload capacity, plus 250 HP and 440 lb.-/ft. of torque.

Ford says that the new diesel engine is made specifically for F-150 users with the need for additional towing capabilities. The design behind the engine was built in part on the 6.7-liter Power Stroke for the Ford Super Duty, and the company says it aimed to make this a more affordable alternative to what the Super Duty offers.

Among the features of the engine: peak torque comes at 1,750 RPMs; a common-rail fuel injection system that optimizes performance and fuel efficiency, while a high-pressure 29,000 lbs. per square inch injection calibration enables smoother, quieter operation with reduced emissions; dual fuel filters are added for improved break-in, while a cast-aluminum oil pan and two-stage oil pump mean reduced parasitic loss and improved fuel efficiency, the company said.

The 3.0-liter Power Stroke diesel engine is paired with a standard SelectShift 10-speed automatic transmission, which the company says was calibrated specifically for the new engine.

In mid-January, Ford dealers begin taking orders for the 2018 F-150 with the new 3.0-liter Power Stroke diesel engine. Deliveries begin this spring.
