Kenworth electric truck test drive, charging equipment overview

Get ready to get behind the wheel of a pair of EVs. At a media event in California, Kenworth provided the opportunity to hop behind the wheel of the medium-duty K270E cab over hauler that can cover applications from Class 3 to 8, as well as take ride in the Class 8 Kenworth T680E. The trucks were comfortable, quiet and very cool as the electric motor torque took off and regenerative braking capabilities brought us back to nearly a stop.

Just as important as the trucks are the equipment options fleets need to parse through in order to charge the batteries. Luckily, Darryl Oster, P.E., chief engineer zero emissions, PACCAR, was on-hand to give me an overview of the PACCAR charging equipment options. Watch the video above for all of his insight and charging equipment advice.

Whenever an OEM unveils a new truck with improved fuel efficiency percentages, the rub is that they're comparing the brand-new spec to their previous "best spec". Chances are, as a fleet manager, you're not replacing the truck you bought last year. You're replacing a truck that's five or six years old (if your lifecycles have returned to pre-pandemic normal).
