Hydrogen ICE, EV growth and the latest sustainable trucking strategies

We talk with Accelera By Cummins, Volvo Trucks, Chevron, Kenworth and Mack Trucks on this episode of FE From the Floor: ACT Expo 2023.

What’s abundantly clear at this year’s ACT Expo is that trucking industry stakeholders are hauling toward greater sustainability. The challenge is that it’s not a “light switch” moment where one day the perfect zero-emissions trucking technology exists and fits every application. We’re in the middle of a massive equipment sea change, and though that can bring uncertainty, it also brings opportunity. Everyone we talked with for this episode of FE From the Floor: ACT Expo 2023 brings a different option and point of view to the table. The challenges that everyone faces on the road ahead are the same–the cost of new technologies, the need for greater infrastructure, and real ROI that fleets can realize–the fun part is that fleets, OEMs, suppliers, and service providers get to decide how they’re going to get to the zero-emissions destination. Watch the video above for a look at a bevy of sustainability solutions.

Show notes!

Amy David, president, Accelera By Cummins kicks us off with her view of the supplier’s role in zero-emissions powertrain technologies. Then we jump over to the Volvo Trucks North America booth where president and chief executive officer, Peter Voorhoeve, provides an update on Volvo’s EV efforts. After that, we head back to the Cummins booth to talk with Jim Nebergall, general manager, Cummins Hydrogen Engine Business,

At the Chevron booth, Nuray Elsi, Chevron’s general manager of renewables, and Walt Collier, Chevron’s commercial on-/off-highway sector manager, discuss decarbonization options. Kenworth’s Sean Henebry, powertrain marketing manager, takes us through the specs of the Kenworth 270E Class 6 truck out in the Ride and Drive area. Then, back inside at the Mack Trucks booth, George Fotopoulos, vice president, eMobility business unit, Mack Trucks, talks about the Mack LR Electric and the new battery electric Mack medium-duty truck.

According to ACT Research, preliminary net trailer orders fell nominally from February to March. At 13,600 units, orders were also down 24% compared to last March 2023. ACT adds that seasonal adjustment (SA) at this point in the cycle leaves March’s tally essentially unchanged at 13,800 units. This, ACT said, matches predictions of a "year of transition" in the industry,
