Taking the commercial driver’s license test

After struggling with shifting, the CDL test is ahead on this episode of the Fuel Efficiency Faceoff.

It wasn’t easy. It was challenging. It was rewarding. It was humbling. But it wasn’t easy. Truck driving is a skill that is sharpened like any other. You can learn the basics, but consistent safe driving and precision equipment operation are learned over time. As the CDL school mantra goes: “They can teach you how to drive a truck, but they can’t teach you to be a truck driver.” I struggled with the first part of that statement.

After I turned off the camera at the end of the last episode, I sat in my car in the Stark State CDL School parking lot for more than 45 minutes. Just sitting. I didn’t even want to be on the road to drive home, let alone get up the next day to struggle through another day of shifting gears. (Grinding or missing them to be more accurate.)

But I did. I showed up. I got back in the truck and I started to work through it. I had the support and guidance of fantastic instructors at Stark State who stuck with me through the best and the worst.

All that’s left is the CDL test.
