When will the 2027 diesel engine pre-buy start?

Volvo Trucks's Magnus Koeck shares his prebuy thoughts, talks 2023 market share and provides a 2024 industry outlook.

At a recent media event that rolled out the new Volvo VNL Class 8 truck, Magnus Koeck, vice president of strategy, marketing and brand management for Volvo Trucks North America, provided an update on Volvo Trucks North America market share, the highs and lows of the trucking market in 2023 and what Volvo Trucks expects to see from the market in 2024.

“We believe this year we roughly be 270,000 [trucks manufactured in North America],” Koeck noted. “You also know that in 2027 we have much more stringent emission legislation that will drive pre-buy in the market. So, 2026—if nothing else is happening in the world—will most likely be a record year for U.S. and Canada. In terms of market, we truly believe that the effect, because customers saw what happened during COVID, and they will not wait until 2026 to buy units. They probably realize that if they wait that long, the industry won’t be able to supply the new trucks.

“The pre-buy will start earlier. We’ll see that later this year and in to 2025 and 2026.”
