BYD unveils Type A school bus with V2G technology

BYD (Build Your Dreams) recently unveiled the Type A battery-electric school bus, “the Achiever,” at the
Transporting Students with Disabilities and Special Needs (TSD) Conference. The Type A is equipped with vehicle-to-grid (V2G) technology that allows the school bus to serve as a power source that provides clean energy during the hours it’s not being operated.

The BYD zero-emission school bus contains the safest battery technology and has up to 60% lower maintenance and energy costs. The vehicle’s stylish design can be equipped with an optional ADA lift-gate capable of carrying up to 800 pounds.

BYD Vice President of Operations, Patrick Duan, said the company is looking forward to students with a clean mode of transportation to schools across the United States. The school buses will be assembled in BYD’s Coach and Bus Facility located in Lancaster, Calif., by members of the Sheet Metal, Air, Rail and Transportation (SMART) union, Local 105.

This fall, eight fleet depots will take part in North American Council for Freight Efficiency’s (NACFE) and RMI’s Run on Less – Electric DEPOT (RoL-E DEPOT), which is focusing on the scaling of electric trucks across a variety of market segments. According to NACFE, the following fleets are helping to showcase what it takes to move from one or two electric vehicles to 15 or more. The transition to electric vehicles is about much more than just the trucks themselves. It is about charging, infrastructure, grid capacity, resilience, etc. RoL-E DEPOT will allow NACFE to share best practices for scaling electric trucks at depots.
