Tires that put the focus on application, engineering advances

The Mid-America Truck Show is the best place to view all the latest equipment, and this year’s latest and greatest included new and proven tire designs.

Mixed service tires

Double Coin and CMA introduced its new Double Coin RR706 mixed service, all-position truck tire. The ultra-premium RR706 all-position, mixed service truck tires are specifically designed for the construction, waste and refuse industry. According to the tire company, rigorous in-house and field testing by Double Coin engineers and selected dealer partners have refined the RR706 in the area of casing durability and unique tread compounds to withstand high-scrub environments.

“Engineered with advancements in tread compounds, patterns and casing construction that enhance performance and retreadability in the toughest and most rugged applications, the RR706 is sure to be the preferred choice for many commercial operations,” said Aaron Murphy, vice president of CMA. The RR706 will be available in the 12R24.5 size initially.”

Three new highway tires

General Tire launched three new highway truck tires at the show. The General HS is a new long haul steer tire featuring an enhanced tread design, fuel-efficient compounding and an upgraded casing platform. The five-rib tread pattern, including a straight groove bottom design, promotes even wear and high removal mileage. Additionally, the grooves feature pyramidal shaped stone ejectors to prevent stone retention and increase retreadability.

The General HD, long haul drive tire, features a deep 32/32nd closed shoulder tread design that offers high mileage and optimal fuel economy while also delivering traction in demanding applications. The tread block geometry promotes stiffness in the footprint, which reduces excess block movement leading to lower rolling resistance and improved fuel economy.

The General HT, long haul trailer tire sports an improved tread pattern, which, the company said, delivers optimal removal mileage and flexibility. The improved scuff rib protects the sidewalls from curbing and cutting therefore reducing damage to the tire and increasing retreadability. Additionally, this new tire has an innovative stone repellent tread pattern with patented groove technology that leads to minimum stone retention thereby extending casing life.

According to ACT Research, preliminary net trailer orders fell nominally from February to March. At 13,600 units, orders were also down 24% compared to last March 2023. ACT adds that seasonal adjustment (SA) at this point in the cycle leaves March’s tally essentially unchanged at 13,800 units. This, ACT said, matches predictions of a "year of transition" in the industry,
