Staying safe: The Hino XL Series’ safety options

Advanced collision mitigation systems have been enjoying increased adoption rates in medium-duty applications as fleet managers see the safety benefits—from keeping their drivers safe to reducing costs associated with crashes. Last year, Hino Trucks and WABCO Holdings Inc. announced a strategic partnership in which WABCO will provide its latest generation braking control technology and a range of advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) for Hino Trucks’ XL Series.

“We get requests every day from fleets to have advanced safety systems,” said Glenn Ellis, senior vice president of customer experience for Hino Trucks, a Toyota Group company. “It provides many benefits to the fleet and right now everyone is focused on safety. Advanced safety features come up in conversation as something that fleets want.”

Under this agreement, the trucks will be available with WABCO’s OnGuardActive collision mitigation system, its OnLaneAlert Lane Departure Warning System, and WABCO’s modular braking system platform mBSP to enable anti-lock braking (ABS) and ESCsmart Electronic Stability Control.

“When you’re talking collision mitigation systems, lane departure warning systems, and beyond—it requires a lot of integration between the brake control manufacturer and vehicle manufacturer,” Ellis said. “It’s about a two-year development process to add that type of technology onto the truck.”
