Consider this your ELD intervention. Last month when we wrote about ELD compliance ahead of the Dec. 16, 2019 (That’s one week from now) deadline, there were hundreds of thousands of trucks that still needed a solution to be fully compliant. “December 16 is the final deadline and drivers not in compliance can expect penalties,” said Ray Sweeney, product manager, compliance, Verizon Connect.
Fleet Equipment caught up with Sweeney and peppered him with questions to bring you answers that should help guide your last-minute ELD shopping.
FE: What are the biggest ELD technology pitfalls to avoid?
Sweeney: Lack of preparation and insufficient training are two big ELD technology pitfalls to avoid. Preparation is key and it’s important for fleet managers to do their research and give drivers ample time as well as the resources to acclimate to new mobile applications and processes. Fleet managers should provide onboarding materials, training content and in-application assistance to help ease the transition.
It’s important to remember that once a solution is implemented, drivers will need additional time for training, so the sooner fleets select a solution, the better. It’s also important to research and compare ELD solutions. Fleets should be looking for solutions from trusted technology partners who can help with implementation and training since both are critical in getting fleets compliant quickly and efficiently.
FE: Once a fleet has its ELD feet under it, what is the next step in taking that data to the next level in terms of improving operational efficiency?
Sweeney: Hours of service data can be used to help maximize the efficiency of the drivers. Reports can show the remaining hours for each driver so fleet managers can see who is available for additional work. Data can also be used to help identify consistent violation areas which can help improve future resource allocation and scheduling.
