XL Fleet launches pilot program with Essential Utilities to electrify utility fleet

XL Fleet and Essential Utilities, Inc. are launching a pilot program to electrify two of Essential’s commercial GM vehicle platforms with the XLH hybrid electric drive system.

The initial pilot will include installing an XL Fleet hybrid system onto a GMC Sierra 2500 HD pickup truck and GMC Savanna Express van.

Essential, headquartered in Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania, deploys a fleet of approximately 2,500 of these vehicles across 10 states. If the pilot is successful on the first two platforms, XL Fleet says Essential plans on electrifying a larger percentage of its fleet with XL Fleet’s hybrid and plug-in hybrid electric drive systems beginning in 2021.

“We are steadily adding more and more customer value and specification choices with our continuous introductions,” says Fredrik Allard, senior vice president and head of e-mobility at Scania. “And the customers reward us with increased interest since it is now obvious how well these trucks serve and behave in actual operations and how truly appreciated they are among drivers.
