How truck technology impacts service, and what fleets can do about it

It’s one thing when new truck technology hits the road and fleet managers have to parse through the ROI and training. It’s a whole new ballgame when that technology rolls into the shop. From ADAS calibrations to engine firmware to electric trucks, the heavy-duty shop landscape is going to shift. For fleets that run their own service (even preventative maintenance) and heavy-duty shops, you have to keep your eye on technician training and equipment investments to make sure you’re keeping up.

So where should you set your shop sight’s first?

For that answer, I turned to David Saline, vice president of sales at DRIVE, an automotive, collision, and truck repair consulting and training group. ASE Master Certified in medium- and heavy-duty truck repair with more than 40 OEM certifications, Saline discusses tips for heavy-duty shop technician training, shop equipment investment and how shops can communicate with fleet managers. Watch the video above for all of the insight.

Oh, how the interview tables have turned!

Not only is Saline an accomplished truck repair guru, he’s also a host on his own video interview show on Facebook. I took the hot seat on his show as he, along with co-host Chris Scully, lobbed questions about the trucking market and trends my way. Click here to watch that video.

I'll play devil's advocate to: "If it ain't broke, don't fix it"--it might not be broken, but could it be better? Sure, your tried-and-true truck spec has worked for you for years, but the latest trucks have model year generations of refinements built into them. Whenever an OEM unveils a new truck with improved fuel efficiency percentages, the rub is that they're comparing the brand-new spec to their previous "best spec". Chances are, as a fleet manager, you're not replacing the truck you bought last year. You're replacing a truck that's five or six years old (if your lifecycles have returned to pre-pandemic normal).
