Ford announces upgrades to E-Transit, charging, software

E-Transit will have an overall estimated range of 159 miles on low-roof cargo van models, in addition to new charging options.

Ford has announced new enhancements to its E-Transit electric commercial van, including upgraded range and new charging options.

For the 2024 model year, the E-Transit will have an overall estimated range of 159 miles on low-roof cargo van models with 89 kWh of usable energy. The additional range over the previous model is an increase of 26% on low-roof and a 32% increase on high-roof models.

Ford says it studied its telematics data and found that the average daily range for commercial vans in the U.S. is 74 miles. E-Transit with enhanced range maintains the same 266 HP and 317 lb./ft. of torque as the prior model, Ford said.

New dual onboard chargers will also enable the E-Transit battery to charge faster. The 2024 E-Transit can charge at a peak power of 176 kilowatts (kW). Fifteen minutes on a DC fast charger (180-plus kW) is estimated to add 67 miles of range on a 2024 E-Transit cargo van low-roof configuration—a 49% increase over the prior battery. And the 2024 E-Transit will charge from zero to 100% in six hours and 11 minutes when using the Ford Pro Series 2 80A charging station—22% faster than the prior battery—providing a full charge overnight, the company said.

Additionally, Ford announced a new Series 2 48A charger, which the company says “is best for fleet drivers who take their vehicles home to charge.” The new-generation charger will feature replaceable cables, a new LCD screen and cellular connectivity with no Wi-Fi required. The Series 2 48A charger will be available for order in mid-2024.

It was also announced last week that Ford commercial vehicle owners of model year 2021 and newer F-150 Lightning pickup trucks and model year 2022 and newer E-Transit vans can receive a complimentary NACS adapter to access Tesla’s 15,300 Superchargers across the U.S. and Canada.

According to sustainability-focused non-profit Ceres, the final emissions standards for light- and medium-duty vehicles released by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) will significantly reduce transportation-related pollution across the country.

The new EPA standards will encourage an accelerated shift to cleaner cars and trucks starting with model year 2027 and are projected to result in two-thirds of new U.S. vehicle sales being zero-emission by 2032, which Ceres says will deliver significant economic, climate, and public health benefits.
