Corralling corrosion: Procedures to protect your trucks

Corrosion sprayThe cost of not dealing with corrosion on the front end is more than you might think. Scott Simmonds, SKF USA Inc. vice president of heavy-duty sales, told the story of one major fleet that ran a three-year study giving the vehicles a full spray of Krown KL73, a solvent-free moisture displacer, once per year. The following components were tracked on sprayed vehicles versus non-sprayed trucks: AC couplers, electrical light connections, wheel sensors and locks.

“Over the three-year period, the fleet saved $2,100 per vehicle—and that included the cost of spraying the product,” he said. “Towing, mechanics being sent to fix issues and general labor savings are above and beyond the $2,100 per vehicle. Other associated costs that are less easily quantified include fleet image and perception based on vehicle condition, down time, trade-in value, safety [faulty wiring, weakened structural components] and added years of service due to better vehicle condition.”

Applying a solvent-free corrosion protection on a maintenance schedule—annually or bi-annually depending upon the truck/trailer application—drastically reduces corrosion issues ranging from rust to premature electronic failures, Simmonds said. He cited a Washington state Department of Transportation study estimating the potential for a 99% reduction in corrosion.

“It is recommended to use a product such as Krown KL73 that is solvent-free, displaces moisture and creeps over exposed areas,” he said. “Please keep in mind that products with solvents will dry out rubber and plastic coatings, creating more issues with premature failure. The regular washing of equipment is also essential. Using a low-pressure wash with proper wash chemicals can alleviate many of the unintended consequences of frequent washing.”
