Truck data security threats are serious

You might be saying to yourself, “Come on, is anyone really interested in my equipment data?” Here’s Andrew Dondlinger, Navistar’s vice president of connected services, with an answer that might send a shiver down your spine:

“Yes, there are people trying to get into all data because they never know what they’ll find. Certainly, I would say all data is at risk, some more than others, but yes, there are always bad guys trying to get into data at all times.”

Okay, reality: checked. As if understanding truck data wasn’t hard enough, now you have to worry about its security. But you’re not alone. Your data solutions providers are keenly aware of security threats. To ensure you’re partnered up with the right provider, here are a few security minded questions to ask.

  • Is the data secured from end-to-end?
  • What technologies are used to secure the data?
  • Do you use a cloud provider such as Amazon Web Services or Microsoft Azure?
  • Is your data center on premises? Do you own it or does another company host it?
  • Who has access to the data?
  • How soon will a potential security breach be reported?
  • How will a security breach be handled?

Keep in mind that most technology companies won’t talk openly about their security protocols. That’s a good thing—less chance someone will hear about them and attack.

“We never publish our security strategy because we never want to give people the blueprint or the head start,” Dondlinger said. “That would be like saying, ‘I’m going to leave my door unlocked at 7 p.m. tonight when I go to dinner for three hours. Go ahead and take what you want.’ The data security is on a need-to-know basis, and only our chief security officer and our chief information officer know the entire footprint of our security measures.”
