Video telematics systems are a relatively new technology that is still evolving and finding new ways of benefiting fleets. So what’s next for video telematics?

“You’re going to see cameras get better and better, you’re going to see compression rates get better and better, you’re going to get clearer and better video,” predicted Jim Angel, vice president of Trimble video intelligence solutions. “We entered the market at 12 frames per second, but in two years that could be 30 frames per second. The challenge there is how to efficiently store it and transfer it over the cellular network so you can continue to do that in real time.

As one example of a future technology, Angel mentioned that Trimble is working on a new video-based technology that would better analyze fatigue. While noting that it’s a bit early in the process to go into too much detail, Angel said that the goal is to be more proactive in recognizing when a driver might be tired or be becoming tired based on their work shift.
