Understanding new diesel engine technology

Understanding new diesel engine technology and making sure it’s used correctly

New GHG 2021 engine updates mean improved efficiency, if you understand the uses of things like predictive powertrain management systems. While the diesel specs remain the same, the technology has that enables efficiency gains has rocketed forward. Once you have a handle on it, you have to make sure your drivers and maintenance managers and partners understand it too. You don’t want to spend more on new technology that isn’t used correctly.

To understand what gains are possible and tips for ensuring that those gains are reaped, I talked with RaNae Isaak, powertrain and TCO consultancy leader at Cummins, who takes us through where to start with new engine technology, how to work with industry partners to find the best engine fit for your fleet and the proper way to train your drivers on the new diesel-fueled features. Watch the video above for all of the details.

Continuing with Cummins

I'll play devil's advocate to: "If it ain't broke, don't fix it"--it might not be broken, but could it be better? Sure, your tried-and-true truck spec has worked for you for years, but the latest trucks have model year generations of refinements built into them. Whenever an OEM unveils a new truck with improved fuel efficiency percentages, the rub is that they're comparing the brand-new spec to their previous "best spec". Chances are, as a fleet manager, you're not replacing the truck you bought last year. You're replacing a truck that's five or six years old (if your lifecycles have returned to pre-pandemic normal).
