Learning the importance of truck electrical system PMs the hard way

The consequences of not attending to lighting and electrical maintenance can be harsh. Getting pulled over for a lamp issue on the trailer or tractor is an invitation for law enforcement to take a closer look at all your inspection points.

Lights are one of the most visible components of any vehicle. In order to avoid a CSA traffic stop and even potential downtime, electrical maintenance checks need to be performed regularly or at least once every 12 months.

Corrosion is the biggest threat to electrical assemblies, so it is important to train everyone on your team on how to spot it and where to find it. By taking this proactive measure from the time you purchased the component, you can increase the life and maintain functionality of the electrical system.

Cables and wires should be constructed from high-quality copper wiring and durable jacketing for superior abrasion resistance to fight off the effects of corrosion, moisture and harsh chemicals used on highways.

The headline is a question that's on a TMC taskforce docket, and one that Al Anderson, vice president of sales and marketing at Peterson Mfg. Co., has a keen interest in.

"We haven't finished the recommended practice yet, but we're trending towards some percentage of LEDs being out before it's not legal anymore, which therefore [means] it's not safe anymore," he said, standing inside the Peterson Mfg. Co. show trailer at this year's TMC show held in New Orleans. "Keeping trailer lights lit is vital to uptime because you're not going to get a violation, you're not going to get an infraction, you're not going to be put out of service by CVSA. It is just very critical to keep everything illuminated like it should."
