Data analysis best practices for fleet efficiency

Having lots and lots of data can feel like having all the answers right at your fingertips. The information, however, can feel like trying to interpret a new language if you don’t know what questions to ask or what you’re even looking for in the first place.

The endless possibilities for data collection can act as a blessing and a curse. On one hand, you can use it to improve efficiency and discover new ways of strengthening your service process. On the other hand, you’re likely to experience information overload if you try to take into consideration every data point streaming off your trucks. Understanding the needs of your fleet through collected data points remains crucial if you want to see operational improvements.

When you’re making equipment decisions, you can’t just play the guessing game either. It’s important that you utilize the data points you have collected to help you operate as efficiently as possible. Not only is it a business necessity, but seeing ROI in a relatively timely manner will additionally establish confidence in using data for your fleet maintenance and operations going forward.

Remember that the data itself isn’t your stand-alone solution for technical issues. Using a database that can act as a future solution for technical issues will only work if you can ingest the information you’re receiving.

Data can be your biggest asset, just so long as you know how to use it.

It’s hard to know where to start – good thing we have Noregon on deck to share how you can get a better understanding of the state of service operations through the data you’re collecting. Watch the video above to learn more.

I'll play devil's advocate to: "If it ain't broke, don't fix it"--it might not be broken, but could it be better? Sure, your tried-and-true truck spec has worked for you for years, but the latest trucks have model year generations of refinements built into them. Whenever an OEM unveils a new truck with improved fuel efficiency percentages, the rub is that they're comparing the brand-new spec to their previous "best spec". Chances are, as a fleet manager, you're not replacing the truck you bought last year. You're replacing a truck that's five or six years old (if your lifecycles have returned to pre-pandemic normal).
