Medium-duty EVs are charged up for applications

If EV range lends itself to short-route, return-to-home applications, then certainly they’d be prime equipment selections for medium-duty applications that many trucks, vans and chassis cabs configurations tackle on a daily basis.

So where are they?

Well, listen closely, because you might just hear the electric hum of the 2,000 Class 3 through 5 battery electric Blue Arc walk-in delivery vans that The Shyft Group aims to deliver over the next several years, thanks to a multi-year pre-order from Randy Marion Automotive Group, a dealer groups in the Carolinas.

The full Blue Arc EV portfolio is available in Class 3-5 walk-in van configurations with body length options from 12 to 22 ft. Designed for high-frequency, last-mile delivery fleets, these vehicles are powered by lithium-ion battery packs that can deliver a 150-mile range at 50% payload in parcel mode with optional extended-range packs available. In addition, multiple chassis wheelbase options at 178-, 190-, 208-, and 230-in. will support different applications.

But The Shyft Group isn’t limiting itself to just the trucks–they’re investing in the entire commercial EV eco system.

For a better look at Shyft’s EV plans and equipment details, we connected with Daryl Adams, president and CEO, The Shyft Group. Watch the video above for all of the details on the Blue Arc EV initiative.

The headline is a question that's on a TMC taskforce docket, and one that Al Anderson, vice president of sales and marketing at Peterson Mfg. Co., has a keen interest in.

"We haven't finished the recommended practice yet, but we're trending towards some percentage of LEDs being out before it's not legal anymore, which therefore [means] it's not safe anymore," he said, standing inside the Peterson Mfg. Co. show trailer at this year's TMC show held in New Orleans. "Keeping trailer lights lit is vital to uptime because you're not going to get a violation, you're not going to get an infraction, you're not going to be put out of service by CVSA. It is just very critical to keep everything illuminated like it should."
