The Inflation Reduction Act electric vehicle, charging opportunities

Tax credits for EV purchase and charging investments are ripe for the taking if you know how to properly implement them.

When the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) passed last August, the two provisions that impact fleet operators are the tax credits for EV purchases and the tax credits for EV charging. Though there were plenty of headlines touting how the IRA would change the transportation landscape, there’s still plenty that we’re discovering about how the tax credits will be enacted. Steve Koerner, vice president of market development, bp pulse, was our regulation sage that led us through the IRA last fall, when he called it a “historic piece of legislation.”

How does that statement hold up eight months later?

“There’s a lot of customer education going on,” Koerner said. “These are still new policies, and so we’re trying to communicate that to customers and potential customers so they know how to access these tax credits in terms of their implementation.”

We reconnected with Koerner who took us deep into the IRA EV-related provisions and credits. He breaks down the legalese, highlights the importance to equipment managers and infrastructure developer stakeholders and shines a light on where commercial operations can leverage the tax credits to make battery electric vehicles a reality. Watch the video above for all of his insight.

The headline is a question that's on a TMC taskforce docket, and one that Al Anderson, vice president of sales and marketing at Peterson Mfg. Co., has a keen interest in.

"We haven't finished the recommended practice yet, but we're trending towards some percentage of LEDs being out before it's not legal anymore, which therefore [means] it's not safe anymore," he said, standing inside the Peterson Mfg. Co. show trailer at this year's TMC show held in New Orleans. "Keeping trailer lights lit is vital to uptime because you're not going to get a violation, you're not going to get an infraction, you're not going to be put out of service by CVSA. It is just very critical to keep everything illuminated like it should."
