Truck service trends: Are predictable service, repair costs on the horizon?

Truck service trends: Are predictable service, repair costs on the horizon?

And does the increase in automated manual transmission service continue? Find out!

It’s one thing to look at a set of truck service data and suss out the trends, but it’s another to come back after another three or four months to step back and look at the big truck service trend picture. Were your assumptions about where those trends would go correct?

That’s why I welcomed back Nick Pittinger, director of data services, Decisiv, who returned with another exclusive set of truck service data to parse through. Last time, Pittinger highlighted the impact of aging trucks in fleet operations and the fact that more automated manual transmissions (AMTs) are hitting truck shops than last year. This time around, a key observation for truck service events in the second quarter of 2023 was the stabilization of service activities within trucks, with only a marginal 0.2% decrease in transactions compared to the first quarter. Pittinger noted that this data indicates a more predictable pattern emerging in the sector.

Another notable trend was highlighted in service activities related to air conditioning and heating systems, which surged by 65%. “Fleets want to get their AC systems prepped for the summer before it gets hot. They don’t want trucks breaking down on the roads and exacerbating heat,” Pittinger noted. Conversely, a few systems saw a decline in service demand. The charging system services decreased by 13%, and steering services fell by 6%.

As for the aforementioned question of AMT service–is it continuing to grow?–and the potential for a return to a more predictable cycle of service and repair costs, watch the video for all of Pittinger’s insight.

You don’t just spec a truck for sustainability in the same way that you don’t spec a truck only for fuel efficiency. Those are important spec’ing considerations to be sure, but safety is equally important, and then there’s connectivity that allows you to better manage your asset. Today’s heavy-duty trucks package all of the important considerations together to deliver on fleet expectations.
