ASE certification moves to online testing

ASE certification moves to online testing

Last October, I talked about the changes coming to the ASE Certification testing program. The biggest of these changes is the move away from traditional written testing to an all-computer-based test delivery starting in July 2011. That process has begun and this year will mark the last time anyone will need a No. 2 lead pencil to take an ASE test. In fact, we’re launching a new promotion to tell the industry about this change. Not surprisingly, it’s called, “Get The Lead Out.”

As I said last October, since ASE’s founding in 1972, paper-and-pencil has been the most common form of certification testing. But today’s technology allows for a much more efficient test delivery process and, after 39 years, written tests will be offered for the final two times in May and November 2011. The move to computer-based testing (CBT) is the natural evolution of any paper-based test these days, but in ASE’s case it also allows the organization to address a number of improvements to our certification program. These improvements include instant results, more frequent testing and the ability to take the test on your own schedule by allowing eight-week testing windows. You can register online at the ASE website and make an appointment to take the test at a time most convenient for you.

Every ASE certification test and its recertification counterpart will be available on CBT. That’s 48 certification tests across 11 specialties. Also, the number of CBT test sites will increase from approximately 200 to more than 300 locations. As before, the tests are offered in proctored test centers, not online over the Internet.

CBT for all ASE certification categories begins July 18 and runs through Aug. 18. Registration opens July 11 and runs through Aug. 15. Beginning in January 2012, computer-based testing will be available eight months of the year in a recurring two months on, one month off cycle. CBT offers more flexible scheduling, more convenience,  and will offer a choice of daytime, night, and even weekend reserved appointments. Perhaps the biggest advantage is that now technicians will know if they passed before leaving the test center.

As part of the changeover process, there will be no Winter 2011 ASE tests offered. Because of this, technicians whose employers require certain tests for bonuses or pay grades should check the expiration date on their ASE credentials. There are three opportunities to take an ASE certification test this year—May, July/August and November.

Perhaps the best news about the new, enhanced CBT program is that it will cost the same as the written tests. So, while we’ve improved accessibility, flexibility and frequency, we’ve also reduced the cost from our previous CBT program. For more information and a list of frequently asked questions, visit the ASE website at www.ase.com or call customer service at 703-669-6600. ASE will release additional information as details are finalized.

As the only nationally-recognized, independent certification program in the industry, ASE provides professional credentials to allow technicians and other service personnel to demonstrate their knowledge and commitment to being the best. As we move toward our 40th Anniversary in 2012, the ASE testing program will continue to provide 21st Century credentials for 21st Century technicians.
