Used oil analysis provides details about engines that might not otherwise be known. A good used oil program helps fleets figure out, with the help of the sample reports, exactly what is going on in the engine and also can provide a working history of engines.
As a result, used oil analysis helps fleets reduce maintenance costs by enabling them to establish proper drain intervals. In addition, oil analysis can be used as a predictive maintenance tool since it can identify problems before they occur and, as a result, help to reduce the risks of premature engine failure.
There are other advantages. First, if it helps fleets extend drain intervals, oil analysis can reduce lubricant and used oil disposal costs. Plus, extended oil drains equate to a lower environmental impact and an argument could be made that lowered oil requirements reduce our dependency on foreign oil sources.
Used oil analysis, however, is only as good as the sample that has been taken and the information the fleet provides its oil-testing partner. Remember to fill out all forms completely and accurately.
