ACT Research releases September ‘State of the Industry’ report

Used Class 8 truck metrics were mixed in September, with same dealer sales inching closer to the six-month moving average, according to ACT Research. Volumes gained 8% month-over-month, but were up just 1% year-over-year, while average mileage remained flat month-over-month, dropping 8% year-over-year. The average age of U.S. Class 8 used trucks climbed to 93 months, while average prices softened further, slipping 4% month-over-month and 8% year-over-year according to the latest release of the State of the Industry: U.S. Classes 3-8 Used Trucks, published by ACT Research.

“According to our dealer conversations, used truck sales continue to be strong overall, but some dealers have reported a slowdown in used truck sales, with the summertime lull hanging on a little longer than usual,” said Steve Tam, ACT’s vice president for the commercial vehicle sector. “One factor affecting used truck sales is that the new truck model year is looming, meaning trucks are close to celebrating their model year birthday.”

The report from ACT provides data on the average selling price, miles, and age based on a sample of industry data. In addition, the report provides the average selling price for top-selling Class 8 models for each of the major truck OEMs – Freightliner (Daimler), Kenworth and Peterbilt (PACCAR), International (Navistar), and Volvo and Mack (Volvo).
