Beginning in June, a new premium SAE 5W-30 API-CJ4 synthetic heavy-duty diesel motor oil will be available from Champion Oil. The UltraFleet engine lubricant, according to the company, provides the same level of protection as SAE 15W-40 HD motor oils. In addition, testing of the lower viscosity SAE 5W-30 oil resulted in an average of 3.3% and up to a 4.5% improvement in fuel economy over a conventional SAE 15W-40 API CJ-4 lubricant. The tests were conduced at an independent facility using the SAE J1321 fuel test protocol.

Champion reports that the new 5W-30 UltraFleet synthetic oil is formulated with a patented friction modifier system that reduces internal drag and results in maximum engine power output to reduce wear and corrosion while enhancing protection to engine and exhaust system components. The oil also has a 50% faster time to pressurization than a traditional SAE 15W-40 oil, the company notes, leading to faster lubrication of valve train hardware and reduced start-up bearing wear.
