Large truck ban on Dragon stretch of road in Tennessee

Peak Technical Institute says large truck ban on ‘the Dragon’ will save lives

The Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT) recently announced a ban on trucks longer than 30-ft. from driving on the stretch of road known as the Dragon.

“For other motorists’ safety, truck driver safety and general road safety, this ban will save lives,” said Greg Dotson, program director and lead instructor for Maryville, Tenn.-based Peak Technical Institute’s Commercial Driver (CDL) training program. “Safety is the main priority in the trucking industry.”

According to TDOT, new signs reflecting the ban will go up in January.

“If a truck driver travels the Dragon, it’s because he didn’t see the sign or he wasn’t informed by his company,” added Dotson. “Your biggest friend as a truck driver are the roadway signs. You have to read that stuff nonstop.”

This recent ban is in addition to other bans or route restrictions across the country.

“If violated, this would likely go under wreckless driving on your record as a truck driver,” said Dotson. “It’s especially critical for truck driving students to be educated on these vital safety measures. Route planning is one of the most important aspects of truck driver education and training.”
