Reman powertrains offer optimum TCO, ROI

According to Townsend, “A great benefit of Cummins ReCon or remanufactured engines is that you can get money back in exchange for your worn-out engine. And you don’t have to ship it away and wait for weeks. Any Cummins-authorized repair facility worldwide will perform a simple external visual inspection and give you an immediate credit toward its replacement.”

Cummins warranty is comprehensive, assuring peace of mind and complete financial protection. Every Cummins ReCon engine comes with a full factory warranty covering 100% parts, labor and progressive damage, with two- to five-year extended coverage packages available on most Cummins ReCon engines.

“With a ReCon engine, you’ll be back in operation in a couple of days,” Townsend notes. “Cummins ReCon engines deliver a valuable return on your time and money. The reduced downtime, improved performance and lower operating costs that come with the superior reliability and durability of a Cummins ReCon engine make it a great value. In addition, getting exchange value for the core makes them even more affordable. Plus, there are environmental benefits because every product that gets remanufactured saves up to 85% in energy and natural resources versus producing the same product new.”

Factory programs

Dean Jacobson, director, reman engine development for Navistar, says. “We currently have factory programs for our I6 and V8 engine platforms. Through our joint venture with Caterpillar Reman, we produce thousands of engines each year, and even more individual components. We have programs in place that allow us to remanufacture everything from engine assemblies to electronics. Engine components such as fuel injectors, turbochargers, high-pressure pumps are remanufactured as for on engine and service.”

He adds that many customers purchase remanufactured engines or transmissions because of the cost savings, versus purchasing new. Remanufactured engines/components go through a rigorous process that ultimately produces a “like-new” product for a fraction of the “new” cost. Another key benefit to purchasing a remanufactured components is that they can be readily available.

Environmentally friendly

“Remanufactured engines are also a good way to be green,” Jacobson says. “With OEM approved engines, parts are more likely to operate smoother, more efficiently and emit fewer pollutants than other rebuilders using non-genuine parts. Remanufactured engines are built with the most current configuration update, as well as all product improvements. In many cases, a remanufactured engine could mean more power to the engine or truck as a whole, and offer better fuel efficiency.”

He adds that if a customer chooses a remanufactured route, it’s best to return to the original manufacturer or OEM. The OEM knows more about what testing was done, what procedures were followed and, ultimately, receive the same quality standards on remanufactured products as they would on new. Customers can rest easy knowing they’re getting the right component for the job. Whether it’s gaskets, seals or wearing parts, if we tested it originally, there’s no guessing you’ll get the right part, with the correct emission characteristics and exceptional quality.
